Special Thanks

NOCS would like to say a special thank you to Kalamalka Rotary for the grant that helped us get to the finish line in a major way in funding for our newest trail. Having the support of Kalamalka Rotary has been a massive help in ensuring we could continue with our efforts to provide new trails for our community.

Vernon's Freshest Blue Trail in Kal Park is ready to ride!

Oh my goodness do I ever DIG this amazing new trail... it is worth the climb to get the flow filled descent. NOCS has finished the lower section of our new trail in Kal Park and it is ready to ride! This lower section has all the classic flow features of berms, rollers, and so much flow... and did I mention that it is RAD!! And.... the top bit will be finished this fall so we have more to look forward to... it is like New Trail Christmas is coming 2x this year! It is a multi-use trail so make sure to hoot and holler your way down:)

A huge shoutout to Kal Rotary for making this dream build possible with their donation of 23K towards the 40K trail. A big thanks to BC Parks for the approval of this amazing trail and for their assistance in executing this project. A huge thank you to all those donations to the Parks Enhancement Fund to a total of $12,000. This was the seed money that made this project grow. And we have to mention none other than our lead board member Mark Dohaniuk who has worked behind the scenes of this project and we owe him not only a great deal of gratitude but a post ride beer if you happen to see him in a parking lot this summer!! Also big shout outs to Jeff and Bridget (our grants and sponsorship dream team). Contour trails deserves a shout out for delivering a piece of flow magic on a tight budget! If we missed anyone or any organization that has contributed their efforts to this build know that we are 100% grateful for your contribution as well!

Now for the shameless plug.... By purchasing your membership you're not only helping us build this trail (contractors, tools, insurance, etc) but you're adding your voice to the advancement of mountain biking in our community. With over 1000 members in 2019, this is only the beginning.

Get your membership at okcycling.com/membership. And you get to sport a bright pink NOCS sticker on your bike, helmet or car to show your support of our local club!

Home Run Trail at Ellison is closed :: plan to re-route in the future.

ATTN: Ellison Trail Update
Please be aware that "Homerun" will be closed for an undetermined time. The trail encroaches on private property which is having a fence installed on their perimeter and will block the trail. We are in the process of approvals with BC Parks to re-route this trail but the current time frame is unknown. Please respect the closure and property owner and do not cross the fence. Thank you!!

Bike Fest... Maybe Next Year

"It is hard to believe that it has not even been a month since the NOCS annual general meeting. A lot has changed in the past three weeks. A small part of the AGM was supposed to be the official launch of Vernon Bike Fest 2020. However, things were already starting to look serious regarding COVID-19 (it had just the day before, on March 11, been declared a pandemic), so I introduced the event, but said that we would make a final decision about its status and announce it within a month. There has been ample evidence for quite some time that it will not be possible for the event to go forward. So, it will come as no surprise that, I am hereby declaring Vernon Bike Fest 2020 officially cancelled.

There is too much uncertainty about when life will return to normal, so rather than attempt to predict a date to which the event can be postponed, we are just going to mothball Bike Fest until next year. For information on what this year's Bike Fest was to look like, and for a preview of what next year's Bike Fest will be, check out http://www.okcycling.com/bikefest. Additionally, we are working to have some events ready so that we can celebrate the day when we get the "all-clear" from our various governmental institutions. So, please stay tuned, and keep well."

- Bike Fest Coordinator, Dave Boutillier

Update from BC Parks

The Provincial Health Authority is requesting the public to practice social distancing to help reduce the spread of Covid19 this includes within our Provincial Parks.

Please follow this link for information regarding Provincial Park use during this time.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Update from RSTBC (Recreation Sites)

A Note from Predator Ridge :: All Trails are CLOSED but should open soon!

The trails are close but remain closed.
Assessments were done twice this last week - Wednesday was good but Thursday was wet and soft - there is still frost still in the ground up there and we anticipate it will get worse before it gets better. If the forecast holds, perhaps open next weekend.
Remedial work was also done on some of the badly rutted areas and the next day, tire tracks were observed on the freshly tamped area - riders are ducking under the ropes and are asked again to respect the closure.

BC Parks and COVID-19 in the Vernon area:

BC Parks and Covid-19 in the Vernon area.

BC Parks has taken steps provincially to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Facilities such as campgrounds, buildings and parking lots have been closed in an attempt to encourage social distancing and reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Please follow this link for further information. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/covid-19/

Locally in the Vernon area there are many popular Provincial Parks, specifically Kalamalka Lake PP, Kekuli Bay PP and Ellison PP. The parking lots at these parks have been closed so access is very limited. In order to prevent our bordering neighbourhoods and residential streets from being impacted by visitors still trying to access the Park,  BC Parks is asking that the public stay local and within their own neighbourhoods so they can walk or ride to Parks within their immediate area. Driving to these Parks is currently not an option.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during these challenging times.

BC Parks.

A letter from the President:

A Letter from the President

March 18, 2020

Hello and I hope, despite Covid-19, this letter is finding you well. It’s been forming, in my head, for several days now (the letter, not the VID – but that’s been weighing in heavily too). It started off as a commentary on the AGM last week and a preamble to the minutes… to welcome you all to the upcoming season… and hopefully raise the mountain bike stoke a little!

Flat tire! More like two flat tires and the wheel has fallen off after an epic OTB!

Seriously though, I want to reach out to and acknowledge the challenges we will all be facing. There are many unknowns and it is easy to be drawn into the negative spiral of social media. Sometimes I get caught up in it and I need to remind my self (or my daughter kindly does) that support, patience and inclusion will help strengthen, rather than divide. We need community now more than ever. How we navigate the next few weeks and potentially months, will re-define us.

It is hard to predict what NOCS Events and Programs will run this year. We are evaluating and making decisions in the next few weeks on those that require registrations or with other time sensitive impacts with consideration to all recommended practice.

- Trail Ninjas, G-Tribe, TNT – Cancelled – refer to notice from Nicole Guerrero

- NCCP Mountain Bike Skills and Tactics Course – cancelled

- Bike Fest – Advise by April 12th (Race has been cancelled)

- Women’s Enduro – Re-evaluate May 1st

When we are able to engage in group activities again we will initiate the Toonie Rides and Trail Days. You will probably feel the excitement as it gets close!

I suspect Bike Fest will be a much scaled back version, if it is possible at all, but at 6 weeks away, I’m hopeful we will be ready and able to celebrate by then. If it’s not the first week of May then it will be as soon as we can, even if it’s as simple as a pack of awesome NOCS members out on bikes and hi-fiving again! I think that is something we must look forward to.

It is too early to speculate on the impact of our planned trail builds this year – it will be vital to keep these projects going in our community.

Unfortunately the trails, an excellent way to socially distance yourself, are not quite ready to go. But they will be soon thought and the challenge will be to stay off them during the melt. Please recognize when you are leaving ruts and help keep the trails in shape to minimize maintenance: Have a watch o Jason Martin’s AGM presentation in the video above.

Naturally some are looking for ways to engage or encourage the community to be active without compromising our safety. There will be some discussions about that throughout Vernon in the coming weeks at the tourism level – if you have some ideas, this will be a great time to get involved and possible enable others.

Thank you to those who attended the AGM last week. Also, to those of you who were unable to make it – thank you for your choice to isolate. We talked about the Strategic Plan and why the Board feels it necessary to move towards having a paid Executive Director and trail crew. With a sustainable funding model we would be able to maintain and grow our club. With over 1050 members last year (fastest growth in the province) and future trail expansion planned, out ability to manage the work load is beyond that of volunteers. Raising our membership fees is one aspect of the sustainable funding model. It was a tough conversation at the Board level because we value our membership but we also value the contribution that NOCS provides mountain bikers and the larger community. After some discussion at the AGM and a general impression that we were not raising the fees enough, we were met with overwhelming support for the proposed fee increase this year as well as the 5% incremental increase each year over the next 5 years.

In the coming months, we will be forming a committee tasked with the process of hiring a paid Executive Director. This could take many different shapes and forms. Perhaps you are or know the right person for this job. Maybe you have some valuable insight into this position and want to get involved – details to come on how to.

Our relatively new Grants and Sponsorship Committee (Jeff, Bridget) will be working to try and develop our overall sponsorship program to support our initiatives.

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Niki, will be trying to task all of you who indicate you can help out in various areas. We always welcome new blood!

Since this follows the Covid-19 talk the reality is that we all have financial uncertainty in the months ahead. It will be a factor in individuals and businesses so please consider your options when spending and shop local as much as possible.

If you can, please maintain your memberships in community groups even while they are closed or appear to not be working in the background (NOCS, Arts, Music, Etc) to ensure they weather the storm.

Tourism is going to need a huge shot in the arm when we get the all clear – please consider being a tourist at home this summer and help rebuild our community. Take time to notice the variety, culture and beauty we have.

Increased membership fees seems even more burdensome this week than last. I would like to acknowledge that NOCS is in a positive position that will get us through this year and allow some new trail progress. We will also be financially able to meet our basic requirements in 2021. There will be tough choices for us all ahead – only you can make them for your situation.

Watch for regular updates from us via our weekly newsletter and social media.

Good luck, take care of yourself, your loved ones, and check in on your neighbors. Thank you for your continued support of the North Okanagan Cycling Society!

Sincerely,

Brett Woods

President

Please respect the trails as they thaw out!!

It feels like its been a LONG WINTER, and we are all looking to get out on the trails as soon as we can. While it was cold and the ground was frozen it was ok, but now as we enter the spring thaw and the ground is soft and our tires are leaving ruts in the mud instead of riding on top we NEED TO GIVE THE TRAILS A BREAK!!

Please, if you’re riding trail and encounter wet muddy sections, re-evaluate: “Should I be riding this trail right now?” As Fat-biking has increased in popularity we are getting use to riding “all year long” It’s almost true but we need to let the frost come out of the ground and let our trails firm up right now .

If you encounter puddles forming on the trail, take a moment to make a small shallow diversion with you shoe or a stick to let the water run off the trail instead of down it.

Report trail conditions on Trail Forks! It will let other trail users know whether a trail is ready to go or not. It also lets our trail crews know where to focus our efforts.

Our Trail Director Jason Martin prepared this message for our Annual General Meeting if you’d like to learn more about the trail crews plans for 2020, including plans for new trails, and how you can help click HERE

Trails Strategy for BC

Let your voice be heard by filling out the survey linked below

The province is undertaking a review of the Trails Strategy for BC. This project is being led by the Provincial Trails Advisory Body and includes participation from Recreation Sites and Trails BC (MFLNRORD), Tourism and Creative Sectors Division (MTAC), BC Parks (MOE) and Transportation Policy and Programs (MOTI) as well as a number of public recreation and non-government organizations.

Trails are important to citizens and communities across the province as mechanisms for rural development, active transportation, reconciliation, economic and tourism development, citizen health and more. In updating this strategy, the province is confirming its commitment to the vision of developing a world-renowned, sustainable network of trails, with opportunities for all, which provides benefits for trails users, communities and the province. This strategy has wide ranging implications and I would encourage you to consider sharing this with your stakeholder network and by providing comment yourself.

The survey can be found at https://engage.gov.bc.ca/trailsstrategyreview/

What did the accountant’s wife say when she couldn’t fall asleep? “Darling, tell me about your work.”

All jokes aside due to unforeseen circumstances our Director of Finance is stepping down and we are looking for an accountant to step up and help out with this much needed position on the Board. Please shoot us an email at okcycling@gmail.com if you are interested, slightly interested or at least willing to help us out in this manner. We look forward to hearing from you!

A note about trail building...

To all members and BUILDERS:

We would like to update you on the status of Noble Canyon and the associated trails. Noble canyon has been a topic of discussion of the past few years and numerous inquiries on both the status of trails, how to build more along with the re-build of Flying Squirrel after the logging operation and working on the existing trails. These trails all fall on crown land under the oversight of Recreation Sites and Trails BC whom, in, 2019 completed a trail assessment of the area and will be sharing the report shortly in the start of 2020. They will not be issuing any section 57 (what we need to make trails legit) until further deliberations and project planning has been complete with all parties involved. This is a multi-use area and all parties must be consulted and work together.

The ensure the BEST outcome, we need to ensure there is no building happening without permission, if we want anything to happen in the near future we MUST comply. Also, if you are caught building illegally it can result in a penalty of up to $10,000, an order to return the area to its original condition, and up to six months of jail time”.

Please enjoy the trails we have, and look forward to a bright future of new trails!
